Background of the Study
Physical fitness is a fundamental aspect of overall well-being, contributing not only to physical health but also to mental and emotional stability. In Kumbotso Local Government Area, Kano State, the rising prevalence of sedentary lifestyles and related health issues among students has prompted educators and health practitioners to explore innovative ways to promote physical fitness. Informal education—characterized by community engagement, extracurricular activities, and peer-led initiatives—has emerged as a viable method to enhance students’ understanding of and commitment to physical fitness (Abdullahi, 2023; Musa, 2024).
Traditional physical education programs in schools often focus on competitive sports and standardized exercise routines, which may not fully engage all students or address the diverse health needs of the community. Informal education, by contrast, offers a flexible and culturally sensitive approach to fitness. Community-based programs, such as local sports leagues, dance groups, and health workshops, create opportunities for students to learn about the benefits of regular physical activity in a supportive and interactive environment. These initiatives not only emphasize physical fitness but also highlight the importance of teamwork, discipline, and overall healthy living (Bello, 2023).
In addition, informal learning environments provide practical, hands-on experiences that can demystify concepts related to exercise, nutrition, and wellness. By engaging with local fitness experts, health workers, and peer mentors, students can develop a more comprehensive understanding of how physical activity influences their health. The experiential nature of informal education helps to break down the barriers associated with formal, didactic instruction, making fitness both accessible and appealing to a broader range of students (Chinedu, 2025).
Moreover, the integration of informal educational practices into the broader framework of health education is critical for addressing the unique challenges posed by urbanization and lifestyle changes in Kumbotso. As the community grapples with increasing rates of obesity and related health complications, promoting physical fitness through informal means can serve as a proactive strategy to improve public health outcomes. This study aims to evaluate the contribution of informal education to students’ understanding of physical fitness, thereby providing insights that can guide the development of more effective and inclusive health promotion programs.
Statement of the Problem
Despite growing awareness of the importance of physical fitness, many students in Kumbotso Local Government Area remain inadequately informed about healthy lifestyle practices. Traditional physical education curricula, which often emphasize competitive sports and routine exercises, do not necessarily address the broader dimensions of physical fitness, such as nutrition, lifestyle management, and holistic well-being. Consequently, students may not fully grasp the long-term benefits of regular physical activity, leading to increased health risks such as obesity, cardiovascular problems, and reduced mental well-being (Sani, 2023).
Although informal education initiatives, including community fitness programs and local health workshops, have been introduced, their impact on students’ understanding of physical fitness has not been systematically evaluated. Many of these programs operate independently of the formal education system, resulting in fragmented and inconsistent messages about health and wellness. Socio-economic factors, cultural beliefs, and limited access to modern fitness facilities further compound the problem, creating an environment where the significance of physical fitness is often undervalued (Yusuf, 2024).
The lack of coordinated efforts to integrate informal educational practices into the formal curriculum exacerbates the issue. Without a comprehensive strategy that bridges the gap between formal and informal education, students are likely to continue receiving mixed signals about the importance of physical fitness. This disconnect not only hinders their ability to adopt healthy habits but also undermines broader public health efforts in the region. Therefore, this study seeks to evaluate the role of informal education in enhancing students’ understanding of physical fitness, with the objective of identifying best practices that can be scaled and integrated into existing educational and health promotion frameworks (Kabiru, 2025).
